Bourton and Frankton are still searching for their first win of the season after a lack-lustre performance on Saturday saw them condemned to a disappointing defeat at home to Rugby FC Reserves.

After an encouraging performance the week before, there was optimism among the B and F of registering an opening league success against the visitors who at the start of play occupied the bottom of the table.  And things started positively for the home side as Tim Sutcliffe finished well to give the hosts the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.

However, the visitors gradually came back into the game and looked the most likely of the two sides to score next.  They had a golden opportunity to do so just before the half hour when they were awarded a soft penalty for an alleged push in the area,  but B and F goalkeeper Paul Ibbett pulled off a fine flying save from the spot kick to keep the score at 1-0.  However that joy was short-lived as moments later from the resulting corner Rugby equalised with a free header into the far corner.

One apiece it stayed going into half time but the visitors continued their momentum going into the second period and on the balance of play deservedly went in front on the hour, albeit with a slight suspicion of a push in the penalty area before the ball was prodded home for 1-2.

As much as B and F tried to find a way back into the game, the fluency in their play and keeping possession wasn’t there and it was perhaps no surprise when Rugby sealed the points with a third goal on 77 minutes.  A further strike from close range on 84 minutes after another quick counter-attack only added further misery for the hosts but to the delight of the visiting contingent.

  • This Saturday Bourton and Frankton will hope to turn their fortunes around when Whitnash Town – currently in second place – are the visitors to The Field; the two sides meeting for the second time in a month for the return league fixture having played out a narrow 1-0 win in favour of the Leamington side a few weeks ago.
